My 3DC locomotives in 3' NG

Post by thegrindre »

Well, I thought I'd start another thread for my locomotives that I plan on building.

This one's my first but, I didn't do it alone. Nwhitney, aka Norm, was quite involved in giving me advise and using his kit-bashing skills, for you see, the 'bogeys' weren't mine. They needed a little altering to get them to look and work as you see them now.

I'll go into a little more detail with the official release but until then, here's the WIP as it stands so far;

Ephraim Shay's cn60 12 ton class A vertical boiler Shay as built in 1883. Or, at least a close representation, anyway...

I still need to do the piping and detailing of the cab area.

Enjoy!

:mrgreen: Very Nice, Rick. Looks really good for an early start.
When you made the announcement, I had some kind of premonition
that it would be a Speeder-Type (or at least someting about that size)
I was close. Anywhoooo, Norm, you and Rick are coming through very nicely
now and since it looks this good, we should expect it to run even better, huh ? :wink:

Remember that 25mph speed limit where the loco left the track ??
I forget who posted that wreck. Perhaps 25mph was a bit speedy wouldn't you say ?
13mph would have felt better.

Looking forward to the release.

Well, I got some steam effects attached to the cylinders, thanks to Norm, again but I now want the steam to stop when the train starts to pull off.
I've been playing around with all the different adjustments and modes in the config file according to the CCG but all to no avail. I can't stop it, now. LOL

Now THAT is something I have been looking for! Wouldn't mind sending me your smoke recipe? I want to see if I can't implement that on the Cass 5 Shay! :D

Here are some pretty cool vids I'm using as reference material;

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wbaQ90lywOU

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fDhUu1Mv8rY

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2O6pkvFbJUc&NR=1
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s7O8hpqdGlE&NR=1

Unfortunately, it isn't supposed to be on all the time. I'm working with Twinkles and plan to only have it ejecting steam when it's sitting idle then small whiffs of steam after it gets rolling but, I don't mind at all, John.
That second vid is showing an extension tube from the upper ejectors. You'll see the effects in some other vids. This extension tube would look really good on your #5, btw.
You're gonna need 6 ejectors as attachment points, John. One at the top and bottom of each cylinder pointing downward at about a 45 degree angle. (I'm using 4 for your two cylinder engine I'm using. They're all, (4), set a bit differently, though. Here's one.)

smoke4 {
attachment "a.cyl1"
mode "time"
color 255,255,255,150
rate 20
velocity 1.5
lifetime 2
minsize 0.05
maxsize 1
}

I've come up with the idea of using the pantograph key to release all this steam but haven't got a clue how to implement it.

Yeah, I do know the extension tubes your talmking about. Shay #5 is not equipped with these tubes. It uses a system more like on #2 in this video I took personally:

If you download my latest beta I have all 6 valves leaking some steam, but it doesn't appear I can apply the effect only during a certain speed, because it also has to be keyed to the animation cycle. Simply put, I can't have it in "time" or "speed" mode while simultaneously in "anim" mode.

If you do figure out how to link it to the pantograph key, please let me know.

I'm having similar problems at the present time but, I'll figure something out eventually...
I may need to go with 8 attachment points to get things working. You'll need 12. LOL

Been experimenting with steam leaks and came up with these two tiny ones.

The whistle is using the smaller of the two but is a bit hard to see.

Ooooo.... I like it! By-the-way... I just visited Seadro Wooly (WHAT A NAME!) a few weeks ago, and they have the Old Skagit Steel and Iron works there, they built logging equipment of all shapes and sizes and I got a lot of pictures of donkey engines, yarders, and even one steam locomotive! I could send you some of the photos if you like, those donkeys engines have a striking resemblance to your loco. :wink: :lol:
