Class B Willamette WIP

Post by ZapperJet »

Hi all,

I thought I'd post the progress of the Willamette's mesh and etc. here for your all to look at.

First off, the prototype, which is detailed on this page: http://www.gearedsteam.com/willamette/e ... ng_107.htm

Second off, the model after about 2 days work:

It's going to take me a while to get this one just right, because the diagrams are incredibly complex, and the Walschaerts valve gear is something all new to me! :?

A Willie! Nice work! And don't worry I think we can wait for this beauty.

For what it's worth, I am totally impressed with 2 days work and at this point
knowing, for the most part, exactly what it will look like once you're done.
It won't matter whether you weather it up or deliver it brand new, I, for one,
will be a proud owner.

From the old photos I will assume it is standard gauge. Couldn't quite tell
otherwise.

Holy smokes! That's a beauty! I can wait, too.

Not sure they ever made a narrow gauge Willie.

Actually, I just found a ton of drawings for different Shay locomotives, including ones of the Roaring camp Shays, heisler, and Climax. I may put up a thread to see what everyone wants as far as a geared locomotive.

Where are you getting these 'plans'??? I'm looking for older ones of the early to mid 1880s-1890s. Have you got a source? I don't mind paying for them.

I get them mainly from Google searches. I find smaller Shays the most, but I found a few big ones. I also have a CAD drawing of West Side Lumber Co. #15.

Luckily, because it takes so little time to model things, I can switch projects if I want and come back to it later. I may even do a quick oddity, like a New Zealand Price Geared loco!

No, just for the moment. I've taken up a rather smaller project involving wooden-rail locomotives and rolling stock.

My main problem is the walschaerts valve gear. I cannot find any documentation as to how it operates.

I can always take it back up at any time. It takes me very little time to actually model this stuff, it comes to me easily. But animating and exporting for TRS is always a pain so I choose which of my models go into it based on what I like most. Trust me, I have at least 10 different models in the works ranging from Class A Shays to Class C Heislers that I will finish at some point.

John,

I'm assuming you've seen this page? http://home.new.rr.com/trumpetb/loco/. The animations are for rod engines, but I don't know how close it would be if you rotated it 90 degrees counterclockwise and replaced the middle wheel with a driveshaft?
