Wonder what they used the winch for?

It would certainly be quite the utility engine. Re-railing a log car or any other light piece of rolling stock. Log skidding or used as a second donkey engine. Loading smaller logs. How about re-railing a mining car?

Maybe to run a small portable sawmill? Nice engine!

Nice, but I meant of the Porter and/or the logging layout

Gave me some ideas for my layout.

Unfortunately that is all it is! It is just a curve that comes from nowhere and goes knower. As you can see in the second pic the second car is not completely there.
I wish I got pics of the other small displays they had in different scales.
It is just a small display that they have for the model railroad stuff! I think it looks great and would like to see more but they didn't make a layout out of it!

The combination of log-handling machinery and locomotive was known as a "gypsy." The gypsy-rigged locomotive was almost exclusively used in the redwood region; although the last one was used in Oregon pine forests in WWII (source: Logging Railroad of the West).

Interesting tidbit of information. I like how they're using the winch on the loco to pull the log to the car. Eliminates the need for a boom type loading device.
