Sound Issues on '04

Post by Col Hogan »

8)
Greeting Gents ( and all the trainz guys, too. . .) lolol

I have run across an issue that has never occured before for me.
Somehow, I have lost the sound in Trainz. The entire PC works fine,
all the sound cues are okay, the sound card works fine in all the right places
but when I open Trainz, generally I get a nice little hollow sound like
I'm in a big hallway. (which is fine, usually) Now, nothing.

If I go to Railyard and test a few horns and listen to the slight shop sounds
while in there (usually), they're gone.
If I open up in Surveyor and run a few tests and listen to the trackside
sounds of the industries and horns of the Loco's (usually), they're gone.
Everything else works. My PC is totally custom with a Realtek Audio
Sound Manager and all the sound sliders are in the correct place.
Nothing has been muted, and all this happened in the course of a day
or two.

I was having a slow-down issue and then I de-Fragged and found a Restore point
that worked fine. Everything works now except the Trainz sound.
I'm stumped. . . . . . .

Defragging shouldn't have hurt anything to any application but restoring a point can cause havoc to applications. In most cases, a new install of the application will be necessary to straighten out any issues you are experiencing.
It's rather difficult and hard to explain but 'going back in time' is not usually a good idea. I relies Microsoft gives you this option but of all the times I've ever used it in the past, it's never worked properly. Aside from the fact of all the hard drive space it takes up and the memory modules it uses, I have it disabled, never to use it again.
What you've done 'today' and the registry tags the system has tagged, is not necessarily the same as they were 'yesterday'.
A fresh install or a re-format of your hard drive is the only answer, sorry.

Oh, and don't forget to back up your necessary files first.

Thankyou Rick for the good info.

If I re-format the hard drive, wouldn't that erase all the good stuff that's
on there now and give me a clean drive with none of my new installs available ??

Seems like a re-format would clean off all the current information that was not there
before now. How about if I re-install Trainz but save all the new assets
to a new folder before I make the change? Re-loading that stupid thing takes forever.

Yes, reformatting your hard drive will erase everything and you will have to start all over again just like you did when you bought the PC. (I do this about once a year, anyway. Just did it a couple weeks ago, btw.)

And, yes, I would re-install Trainz, first, before reformatting a hard drive. (Reformatting will take days, even weeks to set everything back up again as it once was.)

Go to your WORLD directory and drag and drop the stuff you want to keep to a safe place then, reinstall Trainz. Now, drag and drop those files back into the new install BUT, go into the cache folder and delete all the .ja cache files BEFORE YOU LAUNCH Trainz so Trainz will rebuild itself around your 'older assets'.

Hope this solves it.

Whew !! What an ordeal to do that just because of the sound issue.
Thankyou and I will attempt this if I cannot get to the root of the
original problem. I'm supposing that since you do this yearly that
there has been nothing to complain about.

This is my first sound issue in nearly 5 years of ownership.
Amazing.

Ken
I blame it soley on restoring a point. (I don't recommend it, ever.)

As mentioned, I reformat yearly just to clean up all the add-ware, and any other nasties that might sneak by my 'walls of defense'. It's just like starting anew with a new PC all over again. I rather enjoy it, myself, gives me a chance to try new things out and makes my computer run like a rapped ape again.

Yes, it is an ordeal, there's no doubt about it. It ain't easy and not meant for the weak. LOL But it sure does clean up things nicely at the outset...
