34' Box Repaints

I needed some yard fodder for the Colusa & Lake route that would be suitable for 1890s. I liked the idea of all the 34' box repaints that are in the DLS, but found them to be a little too fanciful for reality. To solve this, I created my own repaints that might be of interest to others.

So far I am up to 8 cars, about half are fictional railroads but they play the part well. For each car I used a historic color that would have been available. When possible, they are painted a color they were historically. The C&NW car is Prince's Metallic, which was the color they used on freight cars historically. I will try to work up another pair of cars based on similar prototypes and then upload them to the DLS.
34' Box Cars:

Illinois Central
Chicago & North Western
Flint & Pere Marquette - Blue Line
Boca Brewing Company Reefer
Lehigh Valley Lumber Car
Washoe Valley Railroad
Moraga Springs Northern Ry. Grain Line
Mojave Belt Ry.

I am open to suggestions, but I want to keep these cars looking as close to the prototype as possible, so this means no SP/UP cars, or other cars with plug doors.

As promised, here is closer look at the repaints:

Atlantic & Pacific #500-599
Unlike AT&SF, the A&P ordered a series of 34' cars with normal sliding doors. AT&SF preferred the Wagner plug door design which was a wooden plug door. I've used a typical mineral brown for this color.

Chicago & North Western #4300-4399
Represents CNW 1890s appearance. Correct logo drawn and applied. Painted Prince's Mineral Color, the color used by CNW in the 1890s.

Delaware Lackawanna & Western Railroad #6500-6999
Based on 1890s photographs. Painted Prince's Mineral Color. If you're wondering about the trend, I found a catalog for the paint that was full of letters from railroads who used it.

Chicago Burlington & Quincy #4000-4499
Based on photographs of cars from the 1880s-1890s. Cars are painted Prince's Mineral Color. Use of the color dates back to the 1870s on the CB&Q and remained in use until the 1940s.

A CB&Q Subsidy, so it is painted just like it's big brother.

One of many standard NP box cars purchased in the late 1880s through the early 1890s. The Air Brake slogan on the car is from the late 1890s. Painted a generic mineral brown color.

Northern Pacific Railroad Lumber car #7000-7999
Same scheme as above with the addition of "Lumber" added above the number. That's how NP did it, so that's how I did it.

Boca Brewing Company #101-130
The Boca Brewing Company of California operated a small fleet of reefers for shipping beer across the country. Sadly the brewery burned down in the 1890s and was never rebuilt. A single photograph showing one of these cars exists. Color comes from authentic advertisements for Boca Beer. Some components of the artwork drawn by Don Ball.

I just realized I forgot to post a link. I've stayed pretty busy since my last post with the Narrow Gauge National Convent in Sept and the V&T Conference in October. Sorry for the delay in getting the link to the betas.

Here is the current version of the repaints: https://www.dropbox.com/s/0pf7gpgqhrwnx ... s.cdp?dl=1
There are a handful of minor corrections to make (end lettering/numbers) before I upload them to the DLS.

Enjoy!

These are great, although it is rather late to be to be responding.

Did they ever make it to the DLS?
